Construction of conference center/hotel underway
Construction has begun on the new UNC Charlotte Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, located between the PORTAL Building and J.W. Clay Boulevard. Starting on Tuesday, May 28, and continuing for approximately six to eight months, workers will conduct routine underground rock blasting.
Though the exact times will vary, this work is expected to occur twice daily, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Approximately five minutes prior to each event, a warning siren will sound to notify those nearby. Dust, debris and audible impacts will be minimal. Occupants in PORTAL and other proximal locations may experience slight vibrations during each event. Short-term lane closures in the area may be necessary.
There should be no disruption to campus operations, and personal safety will not be impacted during these routine events. Seismic monitoring stations have been placed around the site for additional observation.
The extracted rock will be transported via North Tryon to the new Early College High School site behind Motorsports II and crushed for use in that project. This work will cause additional noise.
