Lee Engineering professor Vasilije Lukic has died

Vasilije Lukic, a professor in the Lee College of Engineering Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (ECE), died June 2, 2018. The University received official notification in early July.

Lukic was on the UNC Charlotte faculty for more than 30 years. He joined Lee College as an associate professor in 1984, when the ECE Department had only nine faculty members. He contributed to the ECE Department through the development of new courses, graduate student supervision and scholarship. His research expertise included electromagnetic devices, electromechanical energy conversion systems, motor drives, control systems and neural networks.

Prior to UNC Charlotte, Lukic held academic positions both in the United States and Europe. He also worked at NASA, Rockwell International and a number of European companies.

Asis Nasipuri, chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, noted, “Dr. Lukic was passionate about the ECE Department and cared for its future. He will be remembered for his honesty, integrity and his requiring high standards in research from his students. His colleagues and friends applaud his moral courage and kindness toward others. He will be missed.”

Robert Johnson, dean of the William States Lee College of Engineering, added, “Dr. Lukic was a key contributor to the growth and success of our Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He did pioneering work on D.C. motors as a young engineer at the University of Belgrade and continued improving electromechanical devices throughout his career as a professor at UNC Charlotte.”
