Turning a fascination into a career
Since childhood, Dené Logan has been fascinated with computers, building websites and blogs. In fact, she spent hours creating layouts for her Xanga blog without realizing she was actually, “coding.” Today, her hard work and determination is paying off as her fascination becomes her career.
Logan, a nontraditional student from Greensboro, North Carolina, who came to UNC Charlotte via Forsyth Technical Community College, will receive a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the College of Computing and Informatics Saturday, May 13. In July, she will take another big step as she begins working full-time in Wells Fargo’s Technology Analyst program.
Why did you choose UNC Charlotte?
I honestly felt UNC Charlotte had the best computer science program in North Carolina. I knew the curriculum in the College of Computing and Informatics would be more well-rounded and focused on helping me with my future career. On another note, I grew up in Greensboro and lived in Winston-Salem, so I felt I needed to live in Charlotte to complete the trifecta.
What was your career before starting your UNC Charlotte Journey?
Prior to UNC Charlotte, I spent five years working as a reservation and tariff agent for American Airlines. I was able to travel to some awesome places and meet different people. My favorite place to travel to was Tokyo, Japan. I definitely believe that my career with American Airlines shaped who I am in many ways and I am thankful every day that I got to have some of those experiences at a young age.
How has UNC Charlotte shaped you for your next steps?
UNC Charlotte made me into an avid learner, which is pretty much an essential skill for any career in computer science. It also exposed me to so many different fields and helped me tailor my interests in programming.
What advice do you have for young women who want to pursue a career in computer science?
Don’t be scared of your power, your insight and your experiences. Computer science literally needs all of it and will only benefit from your presence. You are meant to be here!
Who is your role model?
My grandmother has been and always will be my greatest role model! She was a woman of immense strength and resilience. She was my queen of hearts.
