Meet Moriah Walker
Moriah Walker is the social media specialist and self-described official #retweeter for UNC Charlotte. Get an inside look into Walker’s job, advice for Niners and her favorite parts of UNC Charlotte.
Can you describe your role at UNC Charlotte?
I’m UNC Charlotte’s official #retweeter and emoji-pedia, responsible for seven social media accounts across four social media platforms. Along with the rest of our incredible social media and communications teams, I have the honor of telling the world about all of the amazing things happening at our University, from research to campus events to stories of our Niners to photos of geese. I just have to do it in 280 characters or less.
What do you enjoy about managing UNC Charlotte’s social media?
You really get to use both sides of your brain in social media, and it keeps you on your toes! I get to be creative and funny, and celebrate students and graduates, but I also have to think strategically and figure out how to share important news or high-level research to a broad audience.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Making someone smile or making their day with something as simple as a comment on their post. It feels like that one random act of kindness creates a chain of kindness throughout the day. #passiton
Do you have a favorite hashtag?
*Insert shameless plug here for students to use #NinerPicks on their posts so that we can share them on our channels.*
What is something about your work that every 49er should know?
Sometimes I have to google things like “what was the most popular song in 1985” when working on the 49er alumni accounts. I’ve actually had to text my grandma about a few things from the ’70s. I had to do the same for “50 gen z words everyone should know in 2022”.
Yes, we really do spend time discussing what emojis to use.
You can spend months planning out an incredible video that doesn’t get a lot of views, but Annie Anne’s will open randomly on a Friday and a photo of it will go viral overnight.
What is your favorite part about being at UNC Charlotte?
The endless opportunities! Whether it’s learning something new or meeting a new friend, there are so many things to explore here. I’m always looking for new adventures, spots or cool things, so send your bucket list recs to the @unccharlotte IG DMs. You never know where your adventure could end up!
What are your favorite things to do on campus?
Work outside the Popp Martin Student Union while drinking my iced coffee … just kidding, I drink hot lattes even in the summer.
What advice do you have for students?
Remember that your value as a human being is not dependent on your grades (but you should work hard), how much you get done in a day, or the amount of money you make. So, show up to the best of your ability, be honest, be kind, be vulnerable, make memories, make mistakes (and learn from them!), and always carry a bit of Niner Pride with you wherever you go!
