Meet Kat Lawrence

Meet Kat Lawrence, a photographer in the Office of University Communications. Learn about her role and favorite areas of campus and her advice for students.

Describe your job and what you do at UNC Charlotte.

I am one of the University photographers. I shoot photos of students, places and events on campus for use on the main website, social media and marketing. My favorite part about the job is how different it can be from day to day. One day I’ll be at The Dubois Center in Uptown shooting a lecture, the next I will be on the field, shooting photos at a football game. Every day is a new adventure.

What’s something about your job that most people don’t know?

Most people don’t know how busy being a photographer can be. Some days, I get to walk around campus just shooting daily activity, and others, I’m running from shoot to shoot and barely have a chance to sit down and check my email.

What’s your favorite part about being at UNC Charlotte?

My favorite part of being at UNC Charlotte is the people. I meet so many amazing students, faculty, staff and alumni through my job. Listening to their stories and seeing how they are making a difference in our world is always inspiring.

When you’re not on campus, what are some things you do in your free time?

I spend most of my free time at home with my family. I like to go out in the backyard and play with my dog or plant things in my garden. If I’m not outside keeping busy, I’m usually reading a book, catching up on TV shows or playing video games.

What’s a place on campus you think every student should visit?

I think students should take some time to visit the Botanical Gardens on campus. It’s a nice break from the classroom or office. There are plenty of short trails to walk, places to sit or put up a hammock and just relax and enjoy the day.

What advice would you give to a new student?

Enjoy every minute of your time here. There is so much to see and do, other than just homework and studying. Go to a sporting event, see a show or dance performance, or take part in one of the many campus activities. Take full advantage of everything UNC Charlotte has to offer.
