Celebrate Earth Day remotely
Celebrating Earth Day is a UNC Charlotte favorite tradition. Due to coronavirus stay-at-home orders, the annual campus cleanup isn’t possible. Students, faculty and staff can, however, scan take pics or videos of themselves cleaning up their own neighborhoods and post them using #unccrecycles and #earthday2020.
In recognition of Earth Day 2020, here are some of the ways UNC Charlotte protects the environment:
- Endorsement by Chancellor Philip L. Dubois of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment to reduce greenhouse gases
- Recognized as a N.C. Smart Fleet Champion for extensive use of vehicles that operate on alternative fuels, including our large inventory of electronic carts
- National honors to Housing and Residence Life for adopting green cleaning products and practices
- Construction and renovation projects deploy methods that reduce water usage and realize energy efficiency
- Waste management efforts divert recyclable materials from landfills
- Zero-waste efforts at Jerry Richardson Stadium achieved a diversion rate of 82 percent in the first 49ers football season
- Dining Services partnerships with compost facilities to reduce food waste
- Campus litter removal efforts led by students, augmented by Adopt-a-Spot program
- Use of rain-water sensors to manage irrigation and rain harvesting systems on roofs to collect water for landscaping
- Tree Campus USA award for commitment to urban forest management–Facilities Management’s Sustainability Office and Grounds Department plants trees annually to add to campus inventory
