Participate in National Volunteer Week from home
Yesterday kicked off National Volunteer Week, an observance UNC Charlotte has acknowledged, celebrated and participated in for several years. This year, volunteering and connecting with the community will be different. However, there are some opportunities for employees to give back without leaving the safety of their homes. For staff members, use of community service leave to participate during normal working hours is approved.
Atrium Health is accepting homemade masks for adult and pediatric patients with flu-like symptoms. Organizations like Classroom Central and Promising Pages are collecting donations of various educational supplies that will be provided to teachers and students once the doors to schools reopen. By donating time to make masks or gather supplies, faculty and staff members can still make a difference in the lives of others during this week.
The fine print
Whether supporting one of the organizations above or selecting a different volunteer opportunity, be mindful of a few things.
The county and state continue to be under stay-at-home orders, and individuals should adhere to the guidelines outlined in the orders.
Staff members who choose to volunteer during the workday should follow the same procedures that apply under standard University operations; consult with supervisors and record leave in KRONOS. Note that the state has made a temporary provision to allow more community service leave through April 30, 2020, for COVID-19 relief beyond the standard 24 hours a year. For questions about whether or not volunteer hours qualify for community service leave, email the Benefits Office at benefits@uncc.edu.
Also, be aware of the current volunteer guidelines that nonprofits have in place. It is important to know that these organizations have made adjustments to adhere to social distancing protocols and stay-at-home orders.
Jordan Harris, associate director of Community Relations, at jordanharris@uncc.edu, can answer questions or concerns about volunteering during this time.
