University to observe National Transfer Student Week

UNC Charlotte welcomes new students to campus virtually every semester, and a significant number of them are transfer students.

This year, the University Transfer Center is partnering with other campus units to offer special programs as part of the campus observance of National Transfer Student Week.

“National Transfer Student week is an amazing way to recognize the presence and representation of our diverse population of transfer students enrolled at UNC Charlotte. Approximately 11,000 undergraduate transfer students are enrolled for the fall 2018 semester,” said Howard Simms, director of the University’s Transfer Center, which opened fall 2017 and is housed within the Office of Undergraduate Education in Colvard Building, Room 2200. “Our mission is to facilitate a seamless transition to our campus, serve as a support and advocacy unit to promote transfer students’ progression to graduation and to enhance student success.”

National Transfer Student Week events begin Monday, Oct. 15, with a Transfer Student Coalition information table in the Popp Martin Student Union Rotunda from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A “Career Meetup: Transfer Students and Your Resume,” scheduled for 4 to 4:30 p.m., is an opportunity for students to meet members of the University Career Center to reframe and reformat their resumes.

The Transfer Student Coalition Social also is scheduled for Oct. 15, starting at 4:45 p.m. in Colvard Building, Room 5094.

Stop by the Belk Plaza between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17, to learn more about the University Transfer Center.

Transfer students can register to attend the “Career Trek to the Mint Museum” from 10 a.m. to noon, Oct. 17 (go to events, then recruiting events on the Hire-a-Niner website). Participants will receive a tour and overview of the museum, internship opportunities and network with current museum staff. Additional information (transportation, specific logistics, etc.) will be sent via email to registrants.

A “Startup Careers Panel,” scheduled for 12:30 to 2 p.m., Oct. 17, in the Career Center, will provide a unique opportunity for students to engage with successful professionals who have started their own businesses. Students will benefit from relevant insight provided by panelists as well as connections facilitated by the panel. Come with questions and be ready to network; lunch will be provided. RSVP via hireaniner.charlotte.edu. Go to events, then career events and search “panel.”

“Career Meetup: Transfer Students and Your Internship/Job Search” will be at 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Career Center. Learn about on-campus jobs, on-campus paid internships and how to network with prospective employers.

Throughout the week, sign up for mock interviews with employers to gain feedback. Go to hireaniner.charlotte.edu, find events, then career events and search “mock.”
