Partners join to provide free workshops on MAX

MAX, the UNC Charlotte Mobile Arts & Community Experience, is in residency throughout the month of May at Aldersgate Retirement Community in east Charlotte, where the mobile classroom/meeting space is the site for daily workshops for all ages.

A broad collection of community partners has come together to provide free programming on MAX, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library, Queen City Forward, the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, Digi-Bridge, and the City of Charlotte. Activities range from children’s story time and arts and crafts to gardening workshops and how-to business sessions. A full calendar of events is available here.

MAX was designed and built in partnership with Boxman Studios, a Charlotte-based company specializing in transforming shipping containers, and funded by a grant from the Knight Foundation. Its unique design allows for a full performance stage set-up as well as a smaller classroom configuration.

The College of Arts + Architecture launched MAX in April 2015 with appearances at Levine Center for the Arts in uptown Charlotte and a week of programming on the UNC Charlotte main campus. Last month, MAX was on the campus of McColl Center for Art + Innovation, where it was used as a rehearsal stage for Assistant Professor of Theatre Carlos Cruz’s Nouveau Sud, Nouveau Cirque project.
