Dance students to perform with Graham Company
Students from the UNC Charlotte Department of Dance will perform Martha Graham’s “Steps in the Street” (1936) for a program with the Martha Graham Dance Company being presented by the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Knight Theater.
Kim Jones, assistant professor of dance, régisseur for the Martha Graham Resource Center and a former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, restaged the work.
“Steps in the Street,” with its subtitle “Devastation – Homelessness – Exile,” is part of a larger work “Chronicle” created by Graham in response to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. The piece, which features 12 dancers, is known for its stark and dramatic movement as it addresses the spiritual damage that war inflicts.
In February, these students will reprise their performance at the Joyce Theater in New York City at the Martha Graham Dance Company’s University Partners Showcase.
