Learn how to create ‘Fabulous Fall Containers’

The UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens will hold a free lecture/demonstration on how to create outdoor planters that look great from October through April.

Greenhouse Manager Tammy Blume and Botanical Gardens Horticulturist Ed Davis will share their secrets for planting and maintaining beautiful mixed planters that thrive in the cooler months during the “Brown-Bag Botanicals: Fabulous Fall Containers” 

Annual Chancellor’s Reception scheduled

This year’s Chancellor’s Reception will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 17, in the Popp Martin Student Union Multipurpose Room.

Hosted by Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, this annual staff recognition event provides an opportunity to socialize and network with colleagues. Light hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served.

Benefits Fair set for Oct. 3

The Benefits Office will host the annual Benefits Fair from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 3, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Salons. 

All employees are invited to enjoy free food, register for vendor door prizes and take advantage of special health events. 

The Leadership Development Program inspires growth, success in participants

Each year, UNC Charlotte sponsors a select number of employees for the Leadership Development Program (LDP) at the Center for Creative Learning in Greensboro. The application for the fall 2017 cohort opens Wednesday, Sept. 20.

The five-day program focuses on six primary competencies: self-awareness, learning agility, communication, influence, resiliency and thinking and acting systematically. Participants also have access to follow-up individual coaching sessions, an assessment to measure progress after training and access to online resources.

Mass CPR training scheduled

On Tuesday, Oct. 3, the Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHS) will host mass training in the use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Classes will be in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center, with three sessions offered at 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Registration is required as space is limited. Sign up by Friday, Sept. 29.

Campus weapons policy revised

University Policy 702, Weapons on Campus, has been revised to be consistent with the newly reworked definition of “weapons” in Chapter 5.b of University Policy 406, The Code of Student Responsibility and amendments regarding knives in state law (NCGS §14-269.2).

Get ready for a festival of fun

Fall break is approaching, and that coincides with an annual autumn tradition — the Staff Council Fall Festival.

This year’s festival is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 10, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.

New faculty learning community to focus on online teaching

The Center for Teaching and Learning is forming a new Online Faculty Learning Community. Faculty members who are interested in enhancing their online or blended courses are encouraged to participate.

“Our online faculty are committed to high quality teaching, and being part of this kind of professional learning community enables them sharpen their skills and share with others,” said J. Garvey Pyke, director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL).

Try Belk Gym for free

During fall break, employees can use the Belk Gym for free. The facility will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 9, and from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 10. Group fitness classes will be offered each day at noon and 5:15 p.m.

Also, Recreational Services is offering a two-week trial of a dedicated workout time of 6 to 7:30 a.m. in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Fitness Center for faculty and staff members who have gold or green memberships. This trial is through Thursday, Oct. 5.

Be a commencement speaker, bell ringer

The Dean of Students Office is seeking two student speakers and two bell ringers for UNC Charlotte’s December commencement ceremonies. Faculty and staff are requested to encourage students graduating in December to apply for one of these prestigious honors.
