Niner Nation Remembrance Commission survey online
The Niner Nation Remembrance Commission is charged with leading a comprehensive process to determine how to best memorialize the lives of Reed Parlier and Riley Howell, the two students whose lives were tragically cut short on April 30; how to best remember the tragedy that occurred that day, a day that will forever be part of UNC Charlotte’s history; and what should be the future utilization of Kennedy Building, Room 236, the site of the shooting.
Graduate School to hold recruitment fair
The UNC Charlotte Graduate School will hold a recruitment fair from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Salons.Prospective students will be able to explore the University’s 150-plus graduate programs and speak informally with graduate program directors, professors, admissions counselors and financial aid/funding representatives.RSVPs requested.
COA+A faculty receive ‘Celebrate Charlotte Arts’ grants
Three faculty members in the College of Arts + Architecture are among the winners of the inaugural “Celebrate Charlotte Arts” grants given by the Knight Foundation. Twelve grants, totaling $200,000, are designated to “fund art that captures the spirit of Charlotte.”Assistant Professor of Theatre CarlosAlexis Cruz and his urban circus project, Nouveau Sud, will receive $25,000 for “La Bestia,” a contemporary circus take on the Central American immigrant journey to the United States.
University response to plea agreement related to April 30
Dear UNC Charlotte Community,Today, the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s office reached a plea agreement resulting in two life sentences for the individual responsible for the April 30 shooting on UNC Charlotte’s campus. While this news does not bring closure to the tragedy that occurred that day, it does bring a definite end to the criminal proceedings.

Tyris Gillis, assistant director for Identity, Equity and Engagement, oversees the Student Advising for Freshmen Excellence (SAFE) program.A peer mentoring program, SAFE was created to support the transition of first-year students to college through personal development programming to foster academic achievement, positive self-efficacy and increase personal growth. It is open to all first-year students, although it has a unique focus on underrepresented student populations (students of color, first-generation students and low socioeconomic status).

The fifth annual #NinerNationGives, a 49-hour digital fundraising campaign, kicks off at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18 and goes through noon, Friday, Sept. 20.
Belk College dean to step down in October
After nine years as dean of the Belk College of Business at UNC Charlotte, Steven Ott has announced his intention to step down from his post on Oct. 15. Ott has served as the dean of Belk College since 2011.
PPS promotes record number of officers
Nine officers within UNC Charlotte’s Police and Public Safety Department have received promotions, following a rigorous, complex process. This is the largest number of promotions announced at the same time in the department’s history.
