Charlotte 49ers spring football practice begins Saturday

The Charlotte 49ers football program will open the 2016 spring season with spring practice starting Saturday, March 19. The spring season will conclude with the annual Green-White Game at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 23. This fall, the 49ers will begin their second season in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as a member of Conference USA.

Head coach Brad Lambert returns 17 starters and 54 letter winners from the 2015 season.

Returners include second team all-Conference USA selections Larry Ogunjobi and Kalif Phillips. 

Test of emergency alert system scheduled for March 25

UNC Charlotte will test its emergency alert system between 10 and 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 25.  

During this test, both a “red” and “yellow” alert banner will appear alternately on University websites. Each of these alerts should produce a LiveSafe message that will be delivered to all UNC Charlotte subscribers of this application.

Schneider among UNC BOG Teaching Excellence Award recipients

Stanley Schneider from the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences is one of the recipients of the 2016 UNC Board of Governors Awards for Excellence in Teaching.

This annual honor recognizes one professor at each of North Carolina’s public institutions. The 17 recipients were nominated by individual campus committees and selected by the Board of Governors’ Committee on Personnel and Tenure. Each award winner will receive a commemorative bronze medallion and a $12,500 cash prize.

U.S. News ranks part-time MBA among nation’s top programs

UNC Charlotte’s Belk College of Business made big gains in the part-time MBA rankings by U.S. News and World Report, placing among the top 20 percent of all business schools nationwide.

The Belk College’s part-time MBA jumped 27 spots in the 2017 “Best Graduate Schools” rankings released Wednesday, landing at No. 59 among national universities and No. 35 among public schools. UNC Charlotte tied at No. 59 with 7 other schools including University of Connecticut, University of Richmond, and University of Colorado-Boulder.

Learn how to plant a tree

Jeff Gillman, director of the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, will teach a course on proper tree planting from 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, March 22, at the McMillan Greenhouse.

According to Gillman, trees can spend a hundred years or more growing in the spot where planted, so it is important to give them a strong foundation.

New system president visits UNC Charlotte

UNC President Margaret Spellings, during a visit to campus Monday and Tuesday, touted Charlotte as a great place to invest and get an education.

On Monday, Spellings visited the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis, had lunch with the chancellor’s executive team and toured campus – with stops at EPIC and the Data Visualization Center.

Buddy Aldridge worked in facilities management for nearly 30 years before retiring in 2000. He passed away in 2015, but his legacy of service to the University will be enshrined forever as part of the Niner Walk Brick Program.

Three new projects selected for spring crowdfunding

Crowdfund UNC Charlotte, an online platform to generate financial support for various campus ventures, returns this month with three new initiatives.

The fundraising projects are student- and alumni-driven initiatives with guidance from faculty or staff members; proposals are submitted to the Division of University Advancement before being promoted through Crowdfund UNC Charlotte.

Spring 2016 Crowdfund UNC Charlotte projects are “Operation SAA Uniforms,” “Women’s Soccer Team Europe Trip” and the “Burkhalter-Rassel Scholarship.”

Connect NC bond approved, UNC Charlotte to receive $90 million for science building

North Carolina voters displayed wide-ranging bipartisan support for higher education on Tuesday by approving $2 billion in bonds for public universities, community colleges, state parks and other projects across the Tar Heel state. Statewide, voters approved the Connect NC bonds with 66 percent voting in favor of the package, according to the latest figures.

Enrollment management receives national micro-grant to fund pilot program

UNC Charlotte is one of nine institutions to receive a $50,000 national micro-grant to fund a pilot program to prevent low-income college students from dropping out prior to graduation.

The Association of Public Land-grant Universities (APLU) and the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU) awarded $450,000 to nine public urban research institutions. Each college received $50,000.
