Architecture student among top 10 in international design competition

Jessica Nutz, an architecture student, was named one of the top 10 finishers in the 2016 International COTE design competition. In its second year, this contest is open to accredited schools in the United States, Canada and Mexico. It is sponsored by the American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment (AIA COTE) in partnership with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). Kyoung-Hee Kim, assistant professor of architecture, mentored Nutz.

Internal Audit Awareness Month, observed annually in May, is an opportunity to call attention to the profession of internal auditing.

Audit professionals work year round to communicate about the field and its value to organizations. A challenge is to combat misperceptions of the profession in which auditors are labeled as “nitpicking fault-finders, blame-layers or bureaucrats.”

Tom York, director of internal audit for UNC Charlotte, said, one of his department’s guiding principles is to help employees “do what they do and do it better.”

10 retiring faculty members honored for service

Ten faculty members whose combined service to the University totaled 194 years were honored at an annual event Thursday, April 28, at the Harris Alumni Center. They will enter the ranks of retired faculty at the end of the spring semester.

University leaders noted that each of the retirees had made important contributions in shaping the institution and strengthening its reputation in the region, around the state and across the country.

Professor recognized as a leading Latina in local education

Child Development and Family Studies Professor Vivian Correa was one of four Latina women recognized this spring for contributions to education at the Inaugural Cesar Chavez Contemplation Breakfast.

New SGA diversity campaign aims to unite Niner Nation

UNC Charlotte’s Student Government Association (SGA) has introduced a new initiative designed to create unity and promote diversity on campus. The campaign, Niner Nation: Different Together, is a two-part, student-led initiative that seeks to showcase and celebrate the differences of students, faculty, staff, administration and alumni.

Levine Hall taking shape

Construction continues on Levine Hall near the main entrance to campus.  Named in honor of Sandra and Leon Levine, the residence hall, when completed later this year, will house more than 400 students, as well as the administrative offices for the Honors College and the Levine Scholars Program.

Journalist, former Levine Museum director to receive honorary degrees at commencement

Charlotte Observer journalist Fannie Flono and Emily Zimmern, former president of the Levine Museum of the New South, will receive honorary doctorates during UNC Charlotte’s May commencement. The University will hold three ceremonies to bestow undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees upon approximately 4,390 students.

Botanical Gardens to host mini-concert

Bring a lunch and enjoy a live performance by a five-piece brass ensemble at noon, Friday, May 6, at the gazebo in the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens.

This one-hour mini-concert, which features musicians from the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, is being held in memory of UNC Charlotte founder Bonnie Cone.

Urban Education Collaborative tours U.S. Department of Education

The UNC Charlotte Urban Education Collaborative traveled to Washington, D.C., recently, where participants received an exclusive tour of the U.S. Department of Education.

Urban Education Collaborative Director Chance Lewis organized the tour as part of the group’s participation in the American Education Research Association conference.

‘City Walks’ will connect neighborhoods across Charlotte

More groups of people will be out walking through Charlotte neighborhoods during May, telling stories and sharing experiences about the places they live, as part of the “City Walks” initiative.
