Manufacturing Engineering names Ph.D. alum a ‘30 Under 30’
Manufacturing Engineering magazine has named Lee College of Engineering alumnus Chris Tyler as one of its “30 under 30” industry professionals who has demonstrated “exceptional talent and leadership in science, technology, engineering or mathematics, which are the essential underpinnings of manufacturing.”
Tyler, who earned a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University in May, accepted a position with Boeing in St. Louis to continue his research on difficult-to-machine materials, according to the article.
Belk college professor to guest on July 23 ‘Live Wire’
Jack Cathey, an associate professor and Master of Accountancy program director, and Mike McNamara, partner at GreerWalker, will be guests on the July 23 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast that airs at 2 p.m. Cathey will share information about the master’s program, and McNamara will describe GreerWalker’s partnership with the University and why he recruits from the accounting programs.
New interactive map to aid navigating campus
On July 15, the UNC Charlotte Facilities Management Department launched a new campus resource aimed at helping faculty, staff, students and visitors explore the campus.
The facilities management information systems team, using Google Maps as a building block, has created an interactive map that offers a wealth of information that individuals can access even before they come to campus.
University water safety expert working on national initiative to reduce drowning
The risk of drowning remains a serious issue for children, but a UNC Charlotte water safety expert is taking part in a national effort to help alleviate that danger. To mark the 100th anniversary of its swimming safety efforts, the American Red Cross has launched a program to cut drowning in half in 50 U.S. cities.
26 employees graduate second-year Business Manager Certification program
The second class of participants in the University Business Manager Certification program recently graduated and were recognized for their accomplishments.
The program, offered through the Department of Financial Services, provide professional development for teams managing department financial resources using accounting, budgeting, and financial analysis methods and a range of personnel processes.
July 16 ‘Live Wire’ devoted to Mount Zion archaeological dig
This week’s “Live Wire,” takes viewers to Jerusalem, the location of UNC Charlotte’s archaeological dig at Mount Zion. James Tabor, professor of religious studies, will speak directly from Israel about the exciting work he and his team have been doing to uncover history in the Holy City. Other guests also will report from the dig, on the July 16 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast, airing at 2 p.m..
Courses scheduled on how to use an AED
The Environmental Health and Safety Office will conduct training on the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) from 1 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 29, and Friday, July 31, in the Cone University Center, Room 208.
These one-hour courses will familiarize attendees with the appropriate use of AEDs in the event of an emergency. UNC Charlotte has more than 40 AEDs located in various buildings across campus.
Campus community encouraged to improve Charlotte air quality
The EPIC Energy and Environmental Assistance Office (EEAO) is conducting three raffles as incentives for employees and students to make healthy choices to improve air quality in Charlotte.
During the summer, Charlotte is affected primarily by ground level ozone, a pollutant that stems from exhaust from cars or trucks, especially when temperatures are higher, according to the EEAO.
Annual ‘Race to the Beach’ contest begun
UNC Charlotte is participating in the “Race to the Beach” clean commute challenge, which is under way. The contest, cosponsored by Charlotte Area Air Awareness, CATS and Sustain Charlotte, offers incentives for individuals to discover new ways to get to work besides driving alone.
Visit RacetotheBeach.com to register for the clean commute challenge. Participants should log in their clean commutes each week of the race to be entered in weekly drawings for prizes.
Blooming Titan named Odie
UNC Charlotte’s burgeoning Titan Arum now has a name – Odoardo or “Odie” for short. The flower is named for Italian naturalist Odoardo Beccari, who discovered the Titan Arum in Sumatra in 1878.
Biology major Mariah Huffman, co-president of the UNC Charlotte Student Community Garden, submitted the chosen name. She said she is excited to have the chance to experience a Titan Arum blossom. While she knew about Bella, the University’s previous Titan Arum, she was not a student when the plant last bloomed in 2010 before it expired.
