Tanure Ojaide, Frank Porter Graham Distinguished Professor of Africana Studies at UNC Charlotte, has received a Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship from the Institute of International Education to share his expertise with students and faculty in Africa.

The UNC Charlotte Alumni Association, in partnership with the University Career Center, recently launched My 49er Network, a powerful interactive platform for alumni, helping them connect socially and professionally with other 49er graduates.

Niner University Elementary (NUE), UNC Charlotte’s first lab school, started the 2020-21 school year with remote learning on Aug. 17 for its 96 K-2 students.”Opening NUE has been a labor of love, years in the making,” said Pamela Broome, principal of NUE. “Though this is not how we envisioned opening NUE, we are off to a great start and are thrilled to begin our journey as part of this community.”

The Office of Identity, Equity and Engagement (IEE) will host a virtual Green Table Talk — a play on Red Table Talk hosted by Jada Pinkett-Smith on Facebook — on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

The University Career Center (UCC) will host the Virtual Web Jamboree 2020 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10, as part of Gold Rush.This free event kicks off the new academic year, and the UCC is partnering with the University Center for Academic Excellence; Office of Education Abroad; Student Involvement; Office of Identity, Equity and Engagement; and Office of Undergraduate Research.

New and returning students can celebrate the start of the fall semester by participating in the more than 30 virtual events hosted by University departments and student organizations.

UNC Charlotte’s School of Data Science, North Carolina’s first undergraduate program in data science, is now enrolling undergraduate students for the fall semester.

Alumnus Adé Hogue ’12 was commissioned by The Undefeated, a sports and pop culture website owned and operated by ESPN, to illustrate the words of Black athletes and leaders “using their platform to speak up for what’s right.”Hogue has frequently provided design work for civic and activist causes and was excited to provide posters “to support those out there fighting for the health and safety of people of color.”

UNC Charlotte’s School of Data Science recently received the 2020 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education. The Inspiring Programs in STEM Award honors colleges and universities that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
