Help name the UNC Charlotte Marching Band
The UNC Charlotte Department of Music is soliciting suggestions for an exciting name for the University’s new marching band that will take the field in fall 2015.
Submit suggestions online through 5 p.m., Monday, Sept. 29. The winning name will be announced on Thursday, Oct. 2, during a special ceremony to unveil the design for the new marching band building.
UNC Charlotte announced in October 2013 that it would field a marching band. Earlier this year, Jeffrey Miller joined the University as the inaugural director of athletic bands from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he served as the assistant director of the Golden Buffalo Marching Band.
In March 2014, the University selected architectural firm Watson, Tate, Savory to design the new marching band building, which will be erected just east of the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts. It will be within walking distance of the field next to Highway 49, where the marching band will practice.
Chancellor Philip L. Dubois will unveil the building design during a ceremony scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Oct. 2, at the building site. The name chosen for the marching band will be announced at that time.
The band will augment the 49er drum line that has performed at home football games since the inaugural contest in August 2013. The introduction of a full marching band—complete with brass instruments, woodwinds and a color guard—will coincide with the 49ers’ ascent into the elite Football Bowl Subdivision as a member of Conference USA.
