‘A Continent on Display’ opens in Rowe Galleries
The Department of Art and Art History and Rowe Galleries are hosting “A Continent on Display: Selections from the Collection of Michael Gallis,” an exhibit that features 10 masks representing nine cultural groups from various regions in Africa.
Gallis provided UNC Charlotte art history major Susan Fredson-Cole access to his private collection. The exhibition will run through Thursday, May 7.
According to Fredson-Cole, the exhibition masks were carefully chosen for their aesthetic quality. They possess a certain personality reflective in their distinct facial characteristics, all-waiting for their stories to be told.
She noted that questions arise when viewing these masks, such as “How was this particular mask used in dance? Who did this mask influence in their community? Where did the mask’s journey begin?”
