Dance Department to present faculty concert
The UNC Charlotte Department of Dance will present its Faculty Dance Concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12, in the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts, Belk Theater.
The concert will feature choreography by guest artists and three faculty members: Gretchen Alterowitz, E.E. Balcos and Rachel Barker.
Created and performed by AGA Collaborative (Alterowitz, Alison Bory and Amanda Hamp), “placed” (2015) explores the concept of competition – the pressures of accomplishment and achievement, the perpetual nature of preparation and the experience of performing presence.
Balcos’s “Forward/Rewind” (2007) is inspired by the movies of Alfred Hitchcock and is set to music by Hitchcock composer Bernard Herrmann. Danced by Balcos and guest artist Kelly Swindell (Greensboro), the duet portrays a shadowy relationship and mysterious events that move forward and backward in time. Balcos will join longtime collaborator Alicia Grayson (Boulder, Colo.) for “Time and Time Again: A Contact and Music Improvisation.” The performance will feature live music by UNC Charlotte professors Brian Arreola and Carl DuPont.
New dance professor Rachel Barker will perform an excerpt from a multimedia work “Silt,” which she choreographed specifically for the Barnett Theater in Columbus, Ohio; she has adapted it for the Belk Theater. A site-specific work, it addresses the experience of place and how that experience lingers in one’s mind and memory.
Tickets are $18 for general admission; $12 for UNC Charlotte faculty, staff and alumni; $10 for seniors; and $8 for students and are available online or by calling 704-687-1849.
