Annual ‘Take Back the Night’ to support survivors, raise awareness
Women and men can be affected by sexual and/or intimate partner violence. To provide a safe, supportive space for individuals who have experienced such violence, as well as a learning opportunity to educate others how to help, UNC Charlotte will hold its annual “Take Back the Night” event at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Salons.
Research indicates that sexual violence and intimate partner violence can affect as many as one in four women and one in six men around the world regardless of race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender identity and sexual orientation.
“Take Back the Night” is a very powerful event where attendees hear survivors tell their stories of their healing journey, said Nicole Madonna-Rosario, interpersonal violence prevention specialist with the Center for Wellness Promotion. The center, in conjunction with the Interpersonal Violence Prevention and Education Committee, is hosting the April 5 event.
Marcel Anderson, author of “Still Living: A Victimized Man’s Journey,” will talk about his journey to healing as a male survivor, and his book will be available for purchase at the event. Kalimah Johnson, founder and executive director of Sexual Assault Services for Holistic Healing and Awareness (SASHA), also will speak and share her experiences as a survivor.
David Spano, associate vice chancellor for health programs and services and director of the Counseling Center, will provide opening remarks. In addition, there will be a performance by the Sigma Beta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha, a candlelight march and a “speak out” at the Student Union Rotunda.
