University to host screening of documentary ‘Creative Abundance’
“Creative Abundance” is a documentary that examines services in place for individuals with developmental disabilities, usually in the form of vocational and rehabilitative workshops that often are sheltered from the public eye and from community interaction.
UNC Charlotte will host a free screening of the film at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 12, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.
In “Creative Abundance,” efforts of Patty Mitchell and Susan Dlouhy, activists who embrace an asset-based approach for organizational innovation and social change, are chronicled. Mitchell and Dlouhy envision workshops as spaces for creative activity and illustrate the power of art to imagine a future beyond the familiar. “Creative Abundance” documents how Mitchell and Dlouhy integrate art programming into workshops to foster human expression, develop individuals’ talents and build community.
This film is part of a series, “The Courage of Creativity,” produced by Lynn Harter, Evan Shaw and Margaret Quinlan, a faculty member in communication studies. Harter, Shaw and Quinlan won a regional Emmy award from the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for the series.
Associate producers are Thomas Hodson, Michael Broderick and Kristen Okamoto (M ’13). Assistant producers are Mark Brewer and Sonia Ivancic. The documentary was developed in association with WOUB Public Media, the Courage of Creativity Initiative and the Barbara Geralds Institute for Storytelling and Social Impact.
