CCI dean accepts Drexel University position
Yi Deng, dean of the College of Computing and Informatics, will become the dean of the College of Computing and Informatics at Drexel University, effective Sept. 1.
“In his seven years at UNC Charlotte, he has guided CCI through a period of strong enrollment growth and increased partnerships with business and industry,” said Joan Lorden, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “The college has more than doubled the number of students seeking computing and informatics degrees, making CCI the largest technology program in North Carolina and one of the largest in the United States.”
The college has added a number of market-leading degree programs, including ones in data science and business analytics and health and financial services informatics, and it is currently exploring a degree in cybersecurity, Lorden noted.
Under Deng’s leadership, CCI undergraduate enrollment has grown to 1,480, and the number of graduate students increased to 870; research funding also is higher.
He joined UNC Charlotte in 2009 from Florida International University, where he served as dean of the School of Computing and Information Sciences. Other academic posts include University of Ottawa and the University of Texas at Dallas.
Drexel is a private university, located in Philadelphia; it has an enrollment of approximately 26,000 students.
