Alan Rauch to talk about dolphins for Personally Speaking
Even before Flipper, dolphins fascinated many people. They loved that the mammals were friendly and intelligent. Dolphins seem to enjoy interacting with swimmers and have been known to protect people under attack by sharks. Despite humans’ familiarity, most people are not well informed about how dolphins evolved, how they function and how they have interacted with humans for millennia.
English professor Alan Rauch used his experience working with and studying dolphins to author “Dolphin.” In this work, he explores dolphins’ propensity to live in pods and their modes of communication. The work also dives into the mammal’s zoology, as well as its social and cultural history, to offer a comprehensive view of these delightful creatures.
Join the conversation with Rauch about his book and the story behind it at Personally Speaking, the author/researcher series presented by UNC Charlotte’s College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and J. Murrey Atkins Library with support from UNC Charlotte Center City.
The conversation will begin at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1, at UNC Charlotte Center City. A book signing and reception will follow.
Personally speaking is open to the public without charge, but RSVPs are requested: Register here. Parking is complimentary at a lot directly across Brevard Street from UNC Charlotte Center City.
Rauch earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in zoology; after which, he earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. in literature. His continuing work in animal studies includes a new book about sloths.
This is the second in the series of four Personally Speaking conversations for 2016-17.
