Convocations, Gold Rush usher in a new academic year

University Convocation and the Day of Convocation provide unique opportunities for the campus community to gather and celebrate the start of the 2018-19 academic year.

Scheduled for 9:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 16, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall, University Convocation is a time to learn about UNC Charlotte’s short- and long-term plans. Speakers will include the presidents of the Staff Council and the student body. The faculty president will present the faculty agenda for 2018-19, and there will be remarks from Chancellor Philip L. Dubois and Provost Joan Lorden. Convocation will be streamed live via the web; watch on Inside UNC Charlotte or at livestream.charlotte.edu.

Also, new members of the faculty and professional staff will be welcomed, and there will be recognition of faculty members granted permanent tenure and those who have been promoted to full professor as well as those who will be starting their 25th year of service to the University. The newest recipient of the Bonnie E. Cone Early-Career Professor in Teaching will be named, too.

Members of the campus community are encouraged to attend a pre-convocation reception at 8:30 a.m. in the Lucas Room.

Day of Convocation, Monday, Aug. 20, is dedicated to welcoming and introducing new students to the UNC Charlotte community.

Students will begin the Day of Convocation (Day One) by assembling at their respective colleges for morning activities. Then, as a group, students will walk to Halton Arena for the Day of Convocation ceremony, which will feature remarks from University leaders. They will outline the University’s history, mission, values and academic expectations. Doors open at 10:30 a.m.; the ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. to noon.

After the ceremony, students will return to their colleges for department-specific programming to acclimate them to their educational journey.

Faculty and first-year course instructors are encouraged to participate in Day of Convocation. They will process in regalia for the Day of Convocation ceremony in Halton Arena. Classes scheduled between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. will not meet on Aug. 20; classes scheduled at 5 p.m. or later will be held.

Gold Rush (formerly Week of Welcome) will take place between Friday, Aug. 17, and Sunday, Aug. 26. All Gold Rush events are free for students and are hosted by UNC Charlotte campus departments and student organizations. Gold Rush aims to instill a sense of Niner pride, teach campus traditions and expose students to campus resources and opportunities for involvement.
