University Recreation said ‘Put your name on it’
During the Day of Convocation, UNC Charlotte students had an opportunity to autograph a white steel beam that will be part of the University Recreation Center, currently under construction adjacent to the Popp Martin Student Union.
Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, who signed the beam first, along with members of University Recreation and the Division of Student Affairs and others were on hand Monday, Aug. 20, to celebrate students’ chance to leave their mark on the new facility. Officials expect the beam to be visible above the indoor track when the center opens in fall 2019.
“This is the last major student life facility that UNC Charlotte will need to construct to properly serve a campus of our size,” said Dubois. “Our students will now have an appropriate amount of space for individual exercise and group fitness. Maintaining personal health is essential for students to be successful in their academic work and for participating in student activities that build the organizational and leadership skills that they will need to be successful after completing their degrees.”
When finished, the 148,000-square-foot University Recreation Center will feature indoor and outdoor pools, multipurpose courts, group fitness studios, a cycling studio, an elevated running/walking track, multi-floor cardio and strength training equipment and a demonstration kitchen. Also, outdoor sand volleyball and basketball courts will be part of the center complex.
