Sigma Tau Delta’s crowdfunding effort to support convention trip
Several members of UNC Charlotte’s Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society, will present creative pieces and participate in a special discussion during the 2019 Sigma Tau Delta International Convention, scheduled for March 27-30 in St. Louis, Missouri.
The University chapter is crowdfunding to raise $3,000 to pay for the registration, travel and accommodations for eight members to attend the convention. This year’s theme is “Work In Progress.”
Sigma Tau Delta President MaKalea Bjoin and member Zach Margolis will present original work during the conference. Bjoin also will read her original short story, and she and other society members will participate in a roundtable discussion about how to improve the K-12 school system.
Sigma Tau Delta sponsors social and scholarly activities on campus. Members from UNC Charlotte have attended conventions the past two years to present their creative work and participate in roundtable discussions.
“It’s extremely important to us just because, as an honor society, I feel like we get national recognition,” Bjoin said. She said attending the convention also helps students with other opportunities, such as scholarships and jobs.
Two other student groups are currently crowdfunding to support projects. UNC Charlotte civil engineering students are raising money for construction materials to design and build a concrete canoe, which they will use to compete in the American Society of Civil Engineers’ national concrete canoe competition.
The UNC Charlotte Baja SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) team is raising money to pay for improvement work on a car that it built as well as buy safety gear such as fire suits and helmets.
