Department of Dance to host International Odissi Conference

The UNC Charlotte Department of Dance will present a three-day symposium of dance performances, master classes and scholarly panels on Odissi, an Indian classical dance, Friday to Sunday, May 3-5.

“Sensate Technicities: A Conversation Across Dance Cultures and Techniques” is directed by Kaustavi Sarkar, assistant professor of dance at UNC Charlotte and an Odissi practitioner-scholar. Presented in partnership with Odissi International and the Indian Association of Charlotte, the symposium will feature more than 100 Odissi dancers from all over the world, in addition to scholars in dance studies, architecture, digital humanities, computer science and anthropology.

“Sensate Technicities” represents the 10th anniversary of the annual Odissi International Conference promoted by Indian art critic Shyamhari Chakra. It marks the first time that this conference has been presented outside of India.

Most events will take place in Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts. A highlight of the symposium will be a gala performance at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 4, in the Storrs Salon.

All symposium events are free, but registration is required. A full schedule of events and registration information can be found on the Sensate Technicities webpage.
