Gold Rush ushers in new academic year
Each August, UNC Charlotte kicks off the academic year by welcoming new and returning students to campus with a week of programming called Gold Rush (formerly Week of Welcome). Gold Rush begins Friday, Aug. 16, with the Union Takeover at 7 p.m. and will run through Sunday, Aug. 25, with the National Pan-Hellenic Council Yard Show.
More than 50 events are part of this year’s Gold Rush, including 12 signature events; Gold Rush is designed to instill Niner Pride, teach campus traditions and expose students to campus resources and opportunities for involvement.
Signature events are:
- RecFest 2019, 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 18, Northeast Recreational Field Complex
- 49er New Year and Kickoff Concert featuring Ari Lennox, 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 18, Barnhardt Student Activity Center and West Quad
- New Student Convocation, 11 a.m. to noon, Monday, Aug. 19
- Student Organizations Showcase, 3:30 to 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 19, CHHS/CoEd Plaza
- University Career Center Plaza Party, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 20
- Wear Green Wednesday
- University Transfer Center T-Shirt Swap, 9 to 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 21, Belk Plaza
- The Game of Life: College Edition, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 21, Atkins Library Lawn
- Norm’s Quest Scavenger Hunt, 3 to 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 23, “49er Miner” (Norm’s Statue)
- Gold Rush Day of Service, 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 24

All Gold Rush events are free for students and are hosted by UNC Charlotte campus departments and student organizations. Students can pick up Niner Pride T-shirts and Niner Pride Guides during Move-In.
