Distinguished violin professor to perform

The Department of Music will present a Faculty & Friends Concert featuring Anne R. Belk Distinguished Professor of Violin David Russell on Monday, Sept. 16, in the Belk Theater in Robinson Hall. Guest pianists Kyle Linscheid and Eric Malson will perform, too.

The program will open with the lyrical and lively Sonata in A major, D 574, by Franz Schubert, to be followed by the Romanian composer Georges Enescu’s Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano, Op. 25, a challenging work that incorporates Romanian folk idioms. The second half of the program is devoted to Spanish music, with pieces by Spanish composers Manuel de Falla and Pablo de Sarasate and the exciting “Spanish Fantasy” by Russian composer Igor Frolov.

The programming reflects Russell’s long interest in the music and culture of Andalucia, where he serves as the director of Masterclass Al-Andalus, a two-week violin masterclass in Alcala la Real, Spain, which explores the influence of centuries-old Andalusian music and culture on the classical repertoire and performance of today.

The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m.; a reception will follow. Tickets are $10 and $8 and are available online or at the Robinson Hall box office.
