The University Recreation Center, the first and only dedicated recreational facility on campus, opened Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020. The new facility will expand and enhance UNC Charlotte’s recreational offerings to provide an extensive wellness experience for every member of Niner Nation regardless of physical ability.

More than a gym, the 148,000-square-foot building aims to help users develop lifelong healthy habits. Here are five of the amenities that you’ll want to check out!

Indoor Pool

Vortex pool at URECThe indoor pool—open year-round—offers lanes for lap swimming, half-court water basketball, a zero-point entry, ADA accessible ramps, a resistance lane and a special vortex pool. With the vortex, users enjoy the ability to swim, walk or run against a current—delivering an excellent workout for all fitness levels. It is especially helpful for those recovering from injuries or those who prefer low-impact activities.

Mind & Body Studio

Mind & Body StudioFive multipurpose and group fitness studios provide space for more than 80 fitness classes per week during the spring semester. The Mind & Body Studio, located on Level 5, is designed to accommodate group fitness options such as barre, advanced yoga, gentle yoga and Pilates. This unique space allows for expanded class offerings such as warm yoga and aerial yoga.

Elevated Track

Elevated track at URECThe running/walking track is elevated high-above the multipurpose courts and provides participants a beautiful, almost aerial view of campus. The track requires six laps for a mile and changes elevations so participants can switch up their general walking routine.

Demonstration Kitchen

Demonstration kitchenThe Demo Kitchen is one of the most-anticipated spaces in the new Recreation Center. Through a partnership with Chartwells and the campus registered dietitian, University Recreation will offer workshops and other educational sessions focusing on healthy and mindful eating.

THE PLAYGROUND

The Playground at URECThe Playground, located on Level 4, is a turf area designed for functional training complete with tire flips, ab/core equipment, a multistation rig, BoxMaster, sled push, battle ropes, weight bags, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) cardio equipment, and more. This is the perfect place for students to bring their outdoor workouts inside!

Need more reasons?

Of course, it wouldn’t be a comprehensive recreational facility without spaces for strength training, cardio fitness, outdoor swimming or a variety of group exercise options.
