Update: Return of Facilities and Administrative funds to investigators
Last fall, UNC Charlotte made several changes to the return of Facilities and Administrative (F&A) funds to investigators, departments and centers. Now, the Office of Research and Economic Development (RED) will eliminate restrictions on amounts returned and accumulated by faculty.
Annual Cap: Previously, for any given fiscal year, an individual investigator could receive a maximum of $20,000 in returned F&A. This cap has been removed; faculty will receive the full ten percent of the F&A generated on projects that include the University’s full F&A rate.
Accumulation Cap: In the past, investigators were permitted to accumulate no more than $20,000 in their F&A accounts. This “accumulation cap” has been removed; there is no limit to the amount carried over from fiscal year to fiscal year.
“Accelerating and incentivizing research is essential to pursuing top-tier research university status,” said Rick Tankersley, vice chancellor for research and economic development. “Investing in the work of our most successful investigators demonstrates UNC Charlotte’s commitment to success in this endeavor.”

RED is committed to the timely distribution of F&A funds to investigators. Funds for the first two quarters of fiscal year 2022 (July 1, 2021-Dec. 31, 2021) will be distributed to investigators by March 31, 2022.
