Kinesiology professor Mike Turner appointed faculty athletics representative
Mike Turner, associate professor of kinesiology in the Department of Applied Physiology, Health, and Clinical Sciences, has been appointed as the University’s NCAA faculty athletics representative, effective Oct. 1.
During this two-year appointment, Turner will provide academic leadership, oversight and advice in the administration of UNC Charlotte’s intercollegiate athletics program. The official job responsibilities include the following:
- Serves as chair on the Chancellor’s Advisory Council on Intercollegiate Athletics, which includes seven members of the faculty appointed by the chancellor from nominations submitted by the FAR and the Faculty Council president. The Chancellor’s Advisory Council also includes several senior University administrators who represent specific areas of the University to ensure institutional control, fiscal responsibility and equity within the administration of the intercollegiate athletics program.
- Reports annually and as requested to the Faculty Council concerning the condition of UNC Charlotte athletics and the academic status of student-athletes.
- Advises the Faculty Council concerning changes in academic policies and regulations that may be beneficial or harmful to the status of student-athletes, as necessary. The FAR may advise the chancellor or the director of athletics concerning administrative issues that also affect student-athletes.
- Ensures institutional control and academic integrity consistent with University, conference and NCAA policies. This includes supervising the administration of the coaches’ certification test, periodically administering NCAA surveys to student-athletes and coordinating the nomination process for postgraduate scholarships.
- Monitors student-athlete welfare, including appropriate treatment of students from underrepresented minority groups.
- Conducts compliance investigations as may be requested by the Chancellor or the Director of Athletics.
Additionally, the FAR may be requested by the director of athletics to participate in the selection of head coaches and select administrative positions within the Athletics Department, and as requested, advises the chancellor on the admission of prospective student-athletes who may not initially satisfy the admission standards for student-athletes as approved by the Faculty Council.
