Niner-Owned Businesses in University City
Niner-owned businesses abound in the Charlotte region, and we’re lucky to have several in University City. From full-bodied wines and delectable desserts to tacos and smoked wings, keep these restaurants and watering holes top of mind.
BOARDWALK BILLY’S RAW BAR & RIBS
Boardwalk Billy’s Raw Bar and Ribs opened in 1998 and it has been a University City landmark ever since. It’s famous for fresh seafood, award-winning BBQ and southern hospitality. Its kitchen has an in-house smoker so their pork, ribs and wings are smoked fresh every day. With a killer outdoor patio overlooking the lake at the Shoppes at University Place, you’ve got the perfect spot to enjoy the popular Crab con Queso or oysters on the half shell.
Along with amazing food, Boardwalk’s has a full bar and serves up signature drinks, including margaritas, mules and other captivating cocktails. They take special pride in their craft beer selection and have 30 brews on tap. Follow on Instagram for the latest specials and events.
SABOR LATIN STREET GRILL
Husband and wife Dalton Espaillat ’07 and Miriam Espaillat ’13 founded Sabor Latin Street Grill in 2013. With a growing empire of 18 locations, it’s fair to say they know what they’re doing, serving some of the most popular and accessible Latin American food in the city.
The food at Sabor is said to be FAB: fresh, authentic and bold. From handmade arepas and loaded Salvador yuca fries to the street-style tacos, burritos and bowls, Sabor strives to deliver the freshest food, the most authentic street food experience and a bold new way to think of Latin cuisine.
Situated directly across the street from the J.W. Clay Blvd./UNC Charlotte light rail station, Sabor’s University City location is easily accessible whether you’re walking, driving or taking the train. Follow on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for all things Sabor-related.
SMALLCAKES UTOPIA
Alumni owners Steve “C.J.” White ’13 and Samantha White ’11, found their happy place with Smallcakes Utopia. When C.J. and Samantha were searching for cupcakes for their wedding, they realized the Charlotte market — especially University City — needed a sweet spot. Thus, Smallcakes Utopia came to life.
Freshly baked cupcakes are their mainstay with tempting daily offerings like Lemon Drop, Wedding Cake and Red Velvet. But the seasonal specials are head turning as well: try the Spiced Pumpkin Cake with cream cheese frosting, or the Vanilla Chocolate Cream with candy corn. Feeling fruity? Try the Apple Cobbler with white chocolate raspberry to satiate your sweet tooth. For those on special diets, they routinely have vegan, gluten-free and keto offerings. As if that weren’t enough, Smallcakes also serves up cookies, whole cakes and several varieties of ice cream — even a red velvet waffle cone. Follow their Instagram for your daily bliss.
WINE VAULT
Tim Wallace ’99 took over University City’s Wine Vault in 2002 and with his touch the charming wine bar has become an area favorite. Wallace started working for the Wine Vault in 1996 and it was such a natural fit, he was approached by the original owners to purchase the store and the rest is history.
But don’t let the name fool you — in addition to wine, they also serve up an impressive assortment of beers, cheese, crackers and other goodies. They have cozy nooks for casual indoor gatherings as well as an outdoor dog-friendly patio. They regularly offer up live music and boast some great specials — join Wednesday Wine Tastings where you can sample six wines for just $5. And they’re available for private bookings, perfect for intimate parties.
