Meet Larry Blomberg
Meet Larry Blomberg, first shift building environmental services manager, in recognition of National Custodian Day, which is observed annually Oct. 2. Blomberg, who recently completed the APPA Leadership Academy, has an interesting perspective for seeing things differently. Plus, learn why he loves the Popp Martin Student Union.
How many years have you been at UNC Charlotte?
I have been with the university since 2010. I started in the Student Union and transitioned to Facilities Management in 2015.
Can you tell us more about your role in Building Environmental Services and Recycling?
I am the first shift building environmental services manager and oversee employees responsible for cleaning assigned buildings. I am also responsible for the hiring of new employees and temp employees. I will soon be involved with work-loading studies to help determine the proper staffing and cleaning routes.
What is your favorite place on campus and why?
I love the Popp Martin Student Union. It was the first place I worked on campus, and I still enjoy seeing how involved the overall operation is with students.
What’s your most memorable experience as an employee?
Anytime I have been able to see other employees during outside training or conferences, I’ve enjoyed the opportunities to see a more genuine side that is often not seen while at work.
Do you have a favorite quote?
It would go along the lines of the analogy about the glass being too full or too empty. So, I have always liked, “Maybe you are just using the wrong size glass, and you have to look at things differently.”
How do you spend your free time when you’re not on campus?
These days, I’m spending time with my wife and keeping busy around the house. Years ago, I was always much busier.
What is the one thing you want employees to remember?
At the end of the work day, remember it is all about the students and the people surrounding this campus. So, we have to treat everything with that in mind.
