How UNC Charlotte can help you embrace self-love

Self-love can mean something different for everyone. Whether it’s treating yourself, embracing fitness, learning about nutrition or improving your mental health, UNC Charlotte has you covered. Here are important ways we equip students, faculty and staff to be the best versions of themselves.

Exercise is for everybody

Sure, you’ve heard of and seen the huge UNC Charlotte University Recreation Center, also known as UREC, but do you know what it really offers?

Well first off, for students, using the facilities is free! UREC is here for you to support your well-being journey throughout college and beyond. Attend as many fitness classes as you want at all different times (because schedules are crazy!). There’s also Belk Gym.

For faculty and staff, it’s pretty close to free. For a very small fee per month, enjoy UREC’s facilities.

Here’s all the things you can enjoy:

  • Four multipurpose courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton and pickleball
  • Outdoor basketball, pickleball and sand volleyball courts
  • Indoor and outdoor leisure pools featuring a vortex loop, four lanes for lap swimming (25 yards) and zero depth entry
  • Over 30,000 square feet of dedicated space for fitness equipment. Additionally, the facility includes group fitness and multipurpose studios, a personal training assessment space, an elevated track and an indoor turf area
  • Locker rooms on the first and third floor including four single use accessible locker/changing rooms
  • Three outdoor terraces with views of the campus and the outdoor pool

There’s a lot to do! It may feel overwhelming stepping into the gym, but UREC offers personal training to help you reach your goals, as well as group classes mentioned above. UREC also offers equipment orientation and “My Steady Mind,” a free cognitive fitness training program.

Learn new and simple ways to cook

Ready to change your cooking game? The demo kitchen offers free cooking classes. Sessions will he offered throughout the semester on a variety of topics in the kitchen from nutritional lectures to “How to Make Your Own” recipes.

Pretty cool, right?

Your mental health and safety matters

The best way to practice self-love is to take care of yourself mentally. For employees and students, UNC Charlotte offers different resources.

Students can take advantage of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services. Whether it’s big or small, CAPS has your back. Make an appointment for counseling, attend helpful events and get trained on how to help your fellow students. Students can visit the Center for Wellness Promotion for help making informed decisions about their personal health and well-being, including issues and topics such as sexual and relationship violence, substance use, recovery from substance use disorders, sexual health and more.

Faculty and staff can learn more about the Employee Health and Wellness resources offered at UNC Charlotte, as well as the new mental health app, Ginger, which offers confidential, on-demand emotional and mental health support from the privacy of your smartphone.

UNC Charlotte offers a lot, and we hope you find the best way to love yourself this month.
