Levine Scholar receives national community service honor
Junior Sarah Whitmire is a Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellow; the national honor recognizes individuals who are investing in their communities through service, research and advocacy.
As a Levine Scholar, Whitmire is working the UNC Charlotte faculty members, practitioners in the Carolinas Healthcare System and a group of women experiencing homelessness on a community-based research project.
N.C. Science Festival topic of April 2 ‘Live Wire’
Jonathan Frederick, director of the North Carolina Science Festival, and UNC Charlotte’s James Hathaway will be guests on the April 2 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. They will discuss the upcoming North Carolina Science Festival and the UNC Charlotte Science and Technology Expo.
Employees can watch “The Live Wire” at their desk or on their mobile devices starting at 2 p.m.
Register for 2015 Undergraduate Research Conference
Registration is open through Wednesday, April 1, for UNC Charlotte’s Undergraduate Research Conference (URC). The conference, now in its fourth year, is a campus-wide showcase of undergraduate research projects. Sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs, Atkins Library, Charlotte Research Institute and the Levine Scholars Program, the 2015 conference will take place Friday, April 24, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
Annual Spring Career Expo set for April 10
The Career Center’s April 10 Spring Career Expo is expected to be at capacity with 210 organizations offering thousands of full-time jobs, internships and co-ops in a range of industries.
Art auction to benefit Levine Children’s Hospital
“Patchwork Epiphany: Art Gallery and Silent Auction” will be from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, April 2, at UNC Charlotte Center City. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Levine’s Children Hospital.
Levine Scholar Noelle Cornelio is organizing the event, which is an outgrowth of a community engagement project that she began last year. She and other student volunteers started teaching art to Levine Children’s Hospital patients and their families. Last year, there was a gallery display featuring the works.
Charlotte Venture Challenge narrows field to 30 finalists
On Tuesday, March 31, the Charlotte Venture Challenge (CVC) will showcase 30 finalists selected from more than 110 startups to vie for cash awards and the opportunity to be introduced to investors, corporate executives and the business community.
This year’s CVC is being held in partnership with the Southeast Venture Conference (SVC), which is expected to draw 600-plus investors and Fortune 500 innovation executives. Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, and Scott Kupor, managing partner of Andreessen Horowitz, are scheduled to speak at the SVC.
PORTAL design a People’s Choice Award winner
The PORTAL Building won the Design People’s Choice Award in the 2015 AIA Charlotte competition. A section of the American Institute of Architects, AIA Charlotte announced its design winners recently during a gala at the Foundation for the Carolinas.
The People’s Choice Awards involved an online vote open to AIA Charlotte members, allied members and the public.
Study abroad students celebrate Holi
During a recent spring break study abroad trip to India, UNC Charlotte students celebrated the spring festival of Holi at Jamia Milia Islamia in Delhi. Also known as the festival of colors, Holi is an ancient Hindu religious festival celebrated in early spring. The UNC Charlotte campus community will hold a Holi celebration at 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 24, on the front fields.
Shanti Kulkarni, social work, and Beth Racine, public health sciences, led the spring break program “Health, Empowerment and Gender Equity in India.”
Computer science chair to guest on March 26 ‘Live Wire’
Bojan Cukic, professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science, will be the guest on the March 26 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. Cukic was named chair in the fall, and he will discuss his background, goals and vision for the department moving forward.

UNC Charlotte cosponsoring Southeast Venture Conference
The Southeast Venture Conference (SEVC) will hold, what is expected to be its largest-ever event, March 31 to April 1 in Charlotte through the backing and support of a trio of new title sponsors, Charlotte Regional Fund for Entrepreneurship (CRFE), UNC Charlotte and the city of Charlotte.
The Charlotte Venture Challenge (CVC) is being held concurrently with the Southeast Venture Conference.
