Families will notice something new this year when registering their children for UNC Charlotte’s Camps on Campus program – the Niner Character Promise.

In an effort to enhance the program’s culture of friendship, inclusion and good citizenship, the Camps on Campus staff members created the Niner Character Promise. This new honor code encourages participants to treat fellow campers and staff with kindness, respect and cooperation in their words and actions; to seek help from others in resolving conflicts; and to respect the property of the University and others.

The next Continuing Education Brown Bag Series “Leading with Emotional Intelligence: Cultivating Your Inner Strength” will be from noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 4, at UNC Charlotte Center City. 

Oscar de la Torre, assistant professor of Africana studies, will discuss Brazil as the third speaker in the 2015 Great Decisions lecture series.  This talk, scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 28, at UNC Charlotte Center City, will be a joint networking event with the Magellan Society, the young professionals of the World Affairs Council of Charlotte.

Roslyn Mickelson was named the 2014 University Professor of UNC Charlotte.  This honor recognizes outstanding scholarly achievement in a professional field, as well as demonstrated ability to excel in interdisciplinary research, teaching and service.  The University Professor is recommended to the UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees by the chancellor and holds this title for life.

The Campus Accessibility Advisory Committee, a 15-member group appointed by the chancellor, recently recommended that students be able to use any gender restroom on campus to which they self-identify. In response, the Trans* Committee and the Office of Disability Services have partnered in a joint effort to establish accessible and gender-neutral restroom facilities in every academic building on campus.

Internship Week is set for Monday, Feb. 2, through Friday, Feb. 6, and the University Career Center will host a week of programs and events to encourage students to gain relevant experience, to prepare them for the internship search and to connect them directly to potential employers.

Beth Whitaker, associate professor of political science and public administration, will discuss U.S. policy toward Africa as the second speaker in the 2015 Great Decisions Lecture Series. The free, public presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 21, at UNC Charlotte Center City.

Retired Col. Mark Mykleby will speak at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, in the Atkins Library, Halton Reading Room, as part of the seventh annual International Speaker Series.

J. Daniel White from the Religious Studies Department will discuss India’s changing political landscape at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 14, at UNC Charlotte Center City. The talk is the first in UNC Charlotte’s 2015 Great Decisions Lecture Series.

Coordinated nationally by the Foreign Policy Association, the Great Decisions program highlights relevant foreign policy issues. The University’s Office of International Programs coordinates an annual lecture series for the Charlotte community in January and February to discuss those issues.
