University to host UNC CAUSE conference
The UNC CAUSE conference will be from Wednesday, Oct. 29, through Friday, Oct. 31, at the Sheraton Charlotte on McDowell Street. UNC Charlotte is the official host of this year’s annual event.
UNC CAUSE was established to help higher education information technology professionals in the UNC system to gather for networking, collaboration and professional development opportunities. The event is open to all UNC system faculty and staff. A number of UNC Charlotte personnel are among the conference speakers this year.
New office to streamline scholarship management
Scholarships help to ease the financial burdens associated with college, and, sometimes, they enable students to better focus on their studies.
The UNC Charlotte Scholarship Office, under the direction of Mark Walter, is a new campus resource that will guide and support all colleges and departments that award endowed and annual scholarships.
Redesigned calculus courses to enhance student success
Calculus courses are foundational for a number of majors, and a recently implemented redesign has created a fresh, modernized approach to the sequence.
Mohammad Kazemi, professor and associate chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, said, “If students do well in Pre-calculus and Calculus I and II, then they can proceed and do well in a number of other disciplines, such as biology, pre-med, chemistry, physics, math, of course, geology, engineering and computer science.”
University to implement new catalog, curriculum management software
As part of the Graduation Initiative, UNC Charlotte is adopting a new catalog content management system Acalog and a paperless course and curriculum approval process system Curriculog.
These two new software programs are part of the multistep initiative designed to clarify degree requirements, reduce barriers to student progression and aid in students’ ability to successfully navigate their curriculum.
Campus minister to guest on Sept. 25 ‘Live Wire’
Stephen Cheyney, director and campus minister of the Cooperative Christian Ministry, will be the guest on the Sept. 25 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. He will talk about the upcoming “50 Years in Campus Ministry” celebration in honor of professor emeritus Loy Witherspoon..
Employees can watch “The Live Wire” at their desks or on their mobile devices starting at 2 p.m.
90-plus employers to attend Off-campus Job and Internship Fair
More than 90 employers are registered to attend this semester’s Off-campus Job and Internship Fair, which will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
Watch the 39th International Festival live
Tune in at noon, Saturday, Sept. 20, for live coverage of the International Festival, an annual event at UNC Charlotte that is entering its 39th year. Considered the region’s largest, most culturally diverse event, International Festival provides a unique opportunity for attendees to experience the world in a day. With more than 50 nations represented, this colorful festival lets individuals engage in a vast array of activities including art, costumes, games, music, dance, and of course, food.
First Ward Park to serve as community centerpiece
First Ward Park is being designed as a community centerpiece – it will be bordered by UNC Charlotte Center City and ImaginOn. At a Sept. 18 ceremony to break ground officially for the park, Chancellor Philip L. Dubois said the park always has been part of Daniel Levine and the University’s vision for First Ward.
Harvard researcher to talk mobility and equality of opportunity
Nathaniel Hendren, assistant professor of economics at Harvard University, will discuss “Intergenerational Mobility and Equality of Opportunity in the United States” at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2, in the College of Health and Human Services, Room 159.
Modest graduate marketing campaign yields major results
During the summer, the Graduate School and the Office of University Communications partnered to initiate a limited marketing campaign to drive awareness of graduate certificate offerings and to boost enrollment in the programs.
University leaders were impressed with the results.
Web-based ads and retargeting, a form of advertising technology that “follows” an audience, were the primary tactics used in the campaign to promote awareness of UNC Charlotte’s graduate certificate programs.
