‘Africa Rising’ topic of seventh annual Maxwell-Roddey lecture

Paul Tiyambe Zeleza, vice chancellor of the United States International University-Africa, will address “Africa Rising: The Role of Higher Education and the Diaspora” at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 8, in the Rowe Arts Building, Room 130. This free, public talk is the seventh Bertha Maxwell-Roddey Distinguished Africana Lecture, sponsored by the Africana Studies Department.

History professor to lead panel discussion ‘La Vida Latina: 21st Century Life in Charlotte’

UNC Charlotte and its Center for the Study of the New South, as part of a partnership with the Levine Museum of the New South, will host the Oct. 6 panel discussion “La Vida Latina: 21st Century Life in Charlotte.” The event will explore Charlotte’s Latina population and the opportunities and challenges Latinas encounter living in the Queen City and the Mid-South.

UNC Charlotte Center City is home to new Jaume Plensa sculpture

Queen’s Table dedicated the sculpture “Ainsa III” by artist Jaume Plensa at UNC Charlotte Center City on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Created in Barcelona, Spain, by the world-renowned artist, the sculpture was commissioned especially for the site by Queen’s Table, an anonymous group that previously has donated six different sculptures to Charlotte’s public spaces during the past 30 years.

Upcoming Projective Eye Gallery exhibit subject of Sept. 10 ‘Live Wire’

Crista Cammaroto, director of galleries, will be the guest on the Sept. 10 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. Starting at 2 p.m., Thursday, she will discuss the upcoming Projective Eye Gallery exhibition “Amalgamation: The Mixed-Media Works of Albert Chong.”

Albert Chong retrospective to open at Projective Eye Gallery

The Projective Eye Gallery at UNC Charlotte Center City will present “Amalgamation: The Mixed-Media Works of Albert Chong,” opening Friday, Sept. 18, with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by an artist lecture at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibition runs through Friday, Dec. 4.

Faculty and Friends Concert Series opens with DuPont and Frisch

The Music Department’s 2015-16 Faculty and Friends Concert Series opens on Tuesday, Sept.15, with a performance by Assistant Professor Carl DuPont, bass-baritone, and Associate Professor Mira Frisch, cellist. Fellow music faculty member Brian Arreola and Gregory Thompson, associate professor of music at Winston-Salem State University, will provide accompaniment.

National writers Bernstein, O’Rourke to talk White House politics

“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House,” featuring noted journalist Carl Bernstein and political satirist P.J. O’Rourke, will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 24, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.

In this free presentation for the campus community, the two writers will offer their perspectives on government, politics and the inner-workings of Washington, D.C.

Dance Department to present faculty concert

The UNC Charlotte Department of Dance will present its Faculty Dance Concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12, in the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts, Belk Theater.

The concert will feature choreography by guest artists and three faculty members: Gretchen Alterowitz, E.E. Balcos and Rachel Barker.

Rowe Galleries to host display of alumni artwork

“Verve: The 2015 Alumni Biennial Exhibition,” featuring work by Brandon Boan, Alexandra Giannell, Bradlee Hicks, Zipporah Camille Thompson, Antoine Williams and Ashley York, will open Tuesday, Sept. 1, in the Rowe Galleries. It will be displayed through Friday, Sept. 25.

Dance professor to reconstruct lost work by Paul Taylor

Renowned modern dance choreographer Paul Taylor has given UNC Charlotte Assistant Professor of Dance Kim Jones the unique opportunity to reconstruct a seminal early work not performed or seen in more than 50 years.
