A capella duo to perform in Student Union

Interactive a capella duo Dakaboom will perform at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 27, in the Student Union Rotunda as part of “Union Unplugged.”

Described as postmodern vaudeville, Dakaboom is a music-and-comedy duo from New York and Los Angeles.

Long-time best friends Ben McLain and Paul Peglar comprise Dakaboom; the two utilize a cappella, loop stations, stand-up, sketch, crowd interaction and several musical genres to create a world all their own.

CAB to host ‘Black-Jew Dialogues’

The stage comedy “Black-Jew Dialogues” will be performed at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16, in the Cone University Center After Hours Lounge. A discussion will follow this free, public event, sponsored by the Campus Activities Board (CAB).

“Black-Jew Dialogues” explores the history and absurdity of prejudice and racism and the power of diversity. The show combines fast-paced sketches, improvisations, multimedia, puppets and a game show to create a performance that has garnered praise across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Film, panel discussion to address women’s rights in India

The University will host a screening of the “Gulabi Gang,” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9, at UNC Charlotte Center City; it is the first offering in the UNC Charlotte Film for Thought series

Rowe Galleries to open three new shows Oct. 2

The Rowe Galleries will feature four artists in three shows during October.

The lower gallery will display “Evergreen: Vespiary,” featuring work by two guest ceramic artists: Valery Zimany and Daniel Bare, professors from Clemson University. The upper gallery will exhibit two independent shows “Heritage” by photographer and University of Virginia professor Pamela Pecchio and “Into the Screen: Still-Life Moving Image,” oil “still-life portraiture” paintings by artist Andrew Leventis.

Novant Health’s Yele Aluko to give annual Maxwell-Roddey Distinguished Africana Lecture

Yele Aluko, senior vice president of Novant Health and medical director of the Novant Health Heart and Vascular Institute, will present “North Carolina’s Rejection of Medicaid Expansion: Politicizing the Health of Our Society” at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the Rowe Arts Building, Room 130. A reception will follow Aluko’s presentation, which is free and open to the public.

CAB’s Friday Night Live to feature Tracey Ashley

Comedian Tracey Ashley will perform at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10, as part of the Campus Activities Board’s Friday Night Live series.
Ashley, who was a semifinalist on the fifth season of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing, is considered hilarious, endearing and all-around fun to watch. She is known for seamless storytelling, sharp topical material and hilarious punch lines. She also appeared on the OWN Network’s comedy special “Wand Sykes Presents: HERLARIOUS,” and she was recently nominated as Best Female Performer by Campus Activities Magazine.

Student Union Art Gallery displaying works by local printmaker

“Passages,” an exhibit featuring work from local printmaker Adrian Rhodes, will be displayed through Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the Student Union Art Gallery. A free reception with the artist will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25.
Artwork in the exhibit explores internal conflict as reflected in the tension between rigid structural forms and organic, intuitive mark making.

Registration open for annual Multicultural Leadership Conference

The University will host the 13th annual Multicultural Leadership Conference from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Student Union. Equality and diversity activist and actor R.J. Mitte will be the conference’s keynote speaker.

Figurative painting exhibit features artwork by UNC Charlotte students

“Figures in Painting,” an exhibit that showcases artwork from students in the Department of Art & Art History, is on display through Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the Student Union Art Gallery.
The studio course “Figure in Painting” is an intermediate painting class that explores the human form as a vehicle for artistic expression. Students use acrylic paints mixed with a variety of other compatible media to observe and experiment with anatomical structure.

Live stream of ‘Violins of Hope’ event set for Sept. 11

The College of Arts + Architecture, in partnership with the UNC Charlotte Center for Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Studies, will present “Stories and Music from the Violins of Hope” on Thursday, Sept. 11, in the Belk Theater of the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts. The event will be available for live streaming starting at 7:20 p.m. for viewing on mobile devices, smart TVs, and personal computers.
