Leadership Development Program applications being accepted

Each year, UNC Charlotte sponsors select employees to attend the five-day Leadership Development Program in Greensboro, North Carolina. Applications for next year’s program will be accepted from Aug. 10 to Sept. 30, 2018.

Weird Recycling Center rolls out

The Weird Recycling Center, located on the first floor of Popp Martin Student Union, provides the campus community an opportunity to recycle unique items.

Funded by the Charlotte Green Initiative, the Weird Recycling Center accepts items such as plastic bags (which must be clean, dry and empty) and unwanted cords, cables, batteries and ink cartridges. The center also provides an opportunity for student organizations to host donation collections for other unique items.

Retirement reception for Sherrie High scheduled

Sherrie High, director of University budgets and financial analysis, will be retiring on Friday, Aug. 31, after 34 years of service.

Financial Services is hosting a drop-in reception in High’s honor from 2 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 28, in Cone University Center, Room 210.

Veteran FM employee Franjo Pauler has died

Franjo Pauler, 60, a member of the Facilities Management Department, died Wednesday, Aug. 8.

Pauler joined the University in 2001; at the time of his death, he served as the lead technician in Building Environmental Services Woodward Hall zone. Colleagues noted he was a valuable member of BES, and his “kind and thoughtful nature would be missed.”

A native of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Pauler moved to Charlotte with his family in 2001. Before coming to the United States, Pauler was employed by Auto Servis Ilijas as a car painter for 20 years.

Special leave awarded by N.C. General Assembly now available

The N.C. General Assembly recently awarded a one-time additional five days of Special Annual Leave Bonus to eligible leave-earning employees in the state effective July 1, 2018. Those working less than 12 months and those in part-time positions will earn a pro-rated amount of time.

Eligible employees will receive an email notification from the Office of Human Resources and will see the balance reflected in Kronos, the University’s timekeeping system, as of Aug. 1, 2018, retroactive to July 1. It is listed as BONSAL.  

Be air aware, join the Clean Commute Challenge

The hot, windless days of summer can cause air quality to decrease, which indicates a greater exposure to airborne pollutants. During the month of August, Charlotte citizens are being challenged to do their part to reduce the amount of pollution in the air.
Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 1, N. C. Air Awareness, in partnership with Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) and Sustain Charlotte, is hosting the Clean Commute Challenge. Participants are asked to avoid single-person-per-vehicle commutes during the month, helping make the air cleaner.

Streamlined orientation experience greets new employees

New UNC Charlotte employees are experiencing a novel, online orientation process. The traditional two-day training has been replaced with a half-day in-person session focused on welcoming new employees, providing a campus tour and introducing them to the online onboarding course in Canvas. University representatives are on hand to provide support in benefits selections. This new model went into effect July 11.

Ethridge needs shared leave

Timmeka Ethridge, Housing and Residence Life, needs shared leave donations. The Benefits Office will accept donations through July 27.
