More recycling bins coming to campus

The Sustainability Office and the Recycling Department are teaming up to add more recycling bins across campus.

Through a grant from the Charlotte Green Initiative, the two campus units plan to add more than 300 “slim” bins, with the primary focus to adding the stations near building entrances.

“Through questionnaires, we’ve found that one of the most important components to recycling is convenience,” said Devin Hatley, sustainability coordinator.  “By pairing up bins with trash receptacles, it allows people to make the easy decision to use the correct bin.”

LiveSafe mobile app offered to enhance campus safety

UNC Charlotte officials are offering a free mobile device application for students, faculty and staff to instantly share safety and security concerns with the University Police and Public Safety Department. The free app, called LiveSafe, is now available as campus safety officials introduced the new technology earlier this month.

Students and employees can download the free app on their smart phones and tablets through iTunes and Google Play.

Staff auditor receives Royster Scholarship

Tara Pritchett, a staff auditor in the Internal Audit Department, recently received a Janet Royster Scholarship to pursue specialized professional development in the field of internal audit.

Pritchett, who holds a master’s degree in accounting, plans to use the scholarship to obtain certification in internal controls self-assessment through the Institute of Internal Auditors. According to Tom York, director of internal audit, this certification is a building block toward the profession’s ultimate credential – certified internal auditor.

EH&S adds four AEDs to campus resources

UNC Charlotte continues to grow, and it welcomes countless visitors to administrative and academic offices, performances venues and Charlotte 49ers athletics events throughout the year. As part of ongoing efforts to protect the campus community, the Environmental Health and Safety Office (EH&S) recently purchased four automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for campus buildings.

Annual business affairs ice cream social scheduled

The Division of Business Affairs will sponsor its annual campus-wide ice cream social from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Friday, June 26, in the Cone University Center, After Hours Lounge.

During this free event for faculty and staff members, vanilla and chocolate ice cream with chocolate syrup, strawberry topping, whipped cream, chopped nuts and cherries will be served while quantities last. Ice water also will be available.

Internal audit isn’t just about the numbers

An internal audit is a systematic and independent examination of data, statements, records, operations and performances of an organization, for a stated purpose. The UNC Charlotte Internal Audit Department was established by the Board of Trustees, with oversight provided by the Audit, Compliance and Enterprise Risk Management Committee.

Internal auditors are tasked to provide independent assurance that the organization’s risk management, governance and internal control processes are operating effectively.

Since 2011, the NCFlex Program, a benefit for state employees, has offered financial planning sessions to assist workers who have questions regarding topics such as retirement planning, estate planning, 401(k) plans or other financial wellness topics.

‘Live Wire’ to feature rebroadcast of episode on ‘The Leadership Experience’

This week’s “The Live Wire” on Thursday, May 28, will be a rebroadcast of a segment devoted to the HR Department’s “The Leadership Program,” which allows participants to develop personal strategies for leadership success, network with peers, share best practices, interact with University leaders and participate in a 360-degree assessment of their leadership strengths and opportunities.

The application process for the next “Leadership Experience” opens Monday, June 1, and runs through Friday, June 26.

How the Internal Audit Department decides which units to audit

The annual audit planning process takes into account a number of factors to determine which campus units will be visited.

Julie Earls, an internal auditor in the Internal Audit Department, stated, “Our internal audit professional standards require UNC Charlotte’s chief audit officer to establish a risk-based audit plan that considers the University’s goals. In other words, what could keep the University from achieving its objectives?”

The audit plan is a direct result of a risk assessment, she added.

Staff Council expresses appreciation during National Police Week

In recognition of National Police Week, the UNC Charlotte Staff Council recently delivered coffee and donuts to the University’s Police and Public Safety Department.

Members of the council’s executive team, chair Jim Kay, vice chair Penny Stevens and communications officer Jessica Barton, dropped by the PPS Department to express appreciation to the officers for “all they do for our campus community.”
