Public forums to solicit input about the design of the Belk Plaza will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Monday, Feb. 8 and 22, in the Cone University Center Lucas Room. (Note a change in the first forum from previous reports.)

The Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness is sponsoring the lunch-and-learn program “Letting Go of the Things that Hold You Back” at noon, Thursday, Jan. 28, in the Student Union, Room 200.

A facilitator from ComPsych Guidance Resources Worldwide will lead this program. The University partners with ComPsych to provide Employee Assistance Program benefits to full-time, permanent employees.

Betty Doster, special assistant to the chancellor for constituent relations, was included on the Charlotte Business Journal’s list of behind-the-scenes newsmakers of 2015.

According to the CBJ, victories in the General Assembly for colleges and for larger cities such as Charlotte have been rare since a Republican majority shifted the state’s emphasis toward cutting taxes and tightening budgets. Among the notable exceptions: UNC Charlotte, which Gov. Pat McCrory included in his $2 billion bond proposal that goes before voters on March 15.

Efforts to remove Belk Tower are still under way. Inclement weather postponed D.H. Griffin Companies’ schedule to dismantle the structure during winter break.

In October 2015, the decision was announced to remove the Belk Tower due to significant structural issues and repairs and renovations estimated at approximately $1 million.  The UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees agreed unanimously to establish an immediate pedestrian safety zone around the tower, which will remain until the structure is dismantled within the next week.

UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois says the $2 billion Connect NC bond package is vitally important to the continued growth of the University and the long-term economic vitality of North Carolina. The bond measure is on the March 15 ballot statewide.

State leaders officially started a formal effort to rally support for the initiative today. Gov. Pat McCrory, Speaker of the N.C. House Tim Moore and Senate Democrat Leader Dan Blue Jr. headlined the Connect NC Bond Campaign Kickoff in the Duke Energy Room of the Jim Hunt Library at N.C. State University Centennial Campus.

Proactive steps by UNC Charlotte to ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff have proven effective on campus and off campus. While crime is very low on campus, the University launched two initiatives aimed at further boosting security.

Charlotte has a new public gem in its crown with the formal dedication of the county’s First Ward Park. Located between East Seventh and Ninth streets, the four-acre park links UNC Charlotte Center City with ImaginOn as part of an educational and cultural district.

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, along with other local officials and community leaders, attended the dedication ceremony hosted by the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department. Throughout the day, park attendees could listen to music and receive a tour.

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois is touting the benefits of the $2 billion Connect NC bond package. At the invitation of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College President Carol Spalding, Dubois recently spoke to the RCCC Boards of Trustees and Foundation, local elected officials and community supporters.

On the Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness website, employees can register via email to receive tips, advice and resources to assist them in running a long-distance race, such as the 49er Gold Rush 5K.

UNC Charlotte’s Hollywood-inspired Giving Green Campaign drew rave reviews from generous faculty and staff members. The result was an epic total of $194,698 in one-time gifts and payroll-deductible pledges to benefit the Arts & Science Council, the State Employees Combined Campaign and the UNC Charlotte Foundation.

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois expressed his appreciation to faculty and staff members who made a financial contribution during a special Giving Green “After Party” in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Wednesday, Nov. 18.
