Plenty of participation, giving and fun at Staff Council Fall Festival

Autumn harvests can be a time of plenty, and at this year’s Staff Council Fall Festival, there was an abundance of employee participation, generosity and camaraderie.

Approximately 700 individuals attended this traditional event that offered food, fun, prizes and contests. It also was a time for community engagement, as University employees contributed items to benefit Joyful Hearts, an organization where people of any age can volunteer and serve the special needs community.

University personnel appointed to UNC Campus Security Committee

Jeff Baker, Dawn Floyd and David Spano have been appointed to the recently established UNC Campus Security Committee.

Comprised of individuals from the University system’s 17 constituent institutions, the UNC Campus Security Committee will advise the president and other members of the UNC system leadership on best policy practices and ways to improve campus safety, in addition to implementing recommendations from campus security initiatives. Committee members include campus safety professionals, students and faculty representatives.

ACCEHW sponsoring webinar on resiliency

The Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness is sponsoring the webinar “Resiliency: Bouncing Back after a Setback” at noon, Thursday, Oct. 15. Employees interested in viewing this offering should register online.

Deadline to join Miles for Wellness walking program

Registration for the walking program Miles to Wellness is through Thursday, Oct. 8. All faculty and staff members are eligible to participate in this four-week challenge that begins Monday, Oct. 12, and runs through Monday, Nov. 9.

The Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness will provide the first 200 participants with a pedometer to use.

Childress Klein gives $2.5 million to UNC Charlotte’s Center for Real Estate

Childress Klein is donating $2.5 million to UNC Charlotte’s Center for Real Estate, which is being named the Childress Klein Center for Real Estate. The gift will fund a new endowed professorship, master’s student professional training programs and faculty fellowships related to research on real estate and urban economics topics. With an expected match from the State of North Carolina for the professorship, the total impact of the gift will be $3.2 million.

Legal affairs to hold fall symposium

The Office of Legal Affairs Fall Symposium will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Salons.

Six sessions are scheduled with three separate tracks in each. Topics in the tracks will focus on students, business/administration and employment.

A continental breakfast and lunch will be served; register to attend online.

Individuals who register to attend this event will receive PowerPoint presentations prior to the symposium via email.

ACCEHW coordinating campus walk

The Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness encourages faculty and staff to join in a campus walk from 2 to 3 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15, as part of the “Every Body Walk Charlotte” initiative. Participants will meet at the Cone University Center Plaza. Individuals who cannot participate at the scheduled time can walk on their own or organize a unit/office/departmental walk for Sept. 15; take pictures and email them to Mackenzie Harkey (mharkey6@uncc.edu).

National writers Bernstein, O’Rourke to talk White House politics

“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House,” featuring noted journalist Carl Bernstein and political satirist P.J. O’Rourke, will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 24, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.

In this free presentation for the campus community, the two writers will offer their perspectives on government, politics and the inner-workings of Washington, D.C.

UNC Charlottes draws 10 percent of its students from the Ballantyne/Union County area and maintains strong relationships with Ballantyne-area companies such as Bissell, MetLife, Premier, Snyder’s Lance and SPX, Chancellor Philip L. Dubois told the Ballantyne Breakfast Club on Saturday.
