Fatma Mili, dean of the College of Computing and Informatics, will participate in a panel discussion related to the film, “The Great Hack,” from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.A screening of the “The Great Hack,” a documentary about the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal, precedes the panel discussion, which will address how data is, and can be, weaponized for political gain.

A new study published in Nature Communications by a research team including UNC Charlotte lead author Tingting Xiang sheds light on how sea anemones, which are closely related to coral, control the size of their algal populations.

UNC Charlotte has opened the Carolinas’ first School of Data Science. This interdisciplinary school allows UNC Charlotte to expand on its programs in the field and open up the growing and diverse field of data science to students with varied career interests.

A $1.83 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will allow UNC Charlotte researcher Rebekah Rogers to continue her focus on complex genetic mutations, which are important in the study of autism, cancer, immune disorders and reproductive disorders.

UNC Charlotte researchers have received two of 43 awards from the inaugural round of grants from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Convergence Accelerator pilot. The new NSF initiative supports multidisciplinary research teams and lays the groundwork for public-private partnerships with Fortune 500 companies to apply Big Data to science and engineering, and create technologies that enhance the lives of American workers.
