Heather Brown, executive director of the Women + Girls Research Alliance, recently learned that a book in which she has a chapter has received two national awards. “The Fat Pedagogy Reader,” edited by Erin Cameron and Constance Russell, has won a 2017 Society of Professors of Education Outstanding Book Award from the American Educational Research Association. Earlier this year, it won the 2016 American Educational Studies Association Critics’ Choice Award.

UNC Charlotte employees interested in the Janet Royster Memorial Staff Scholarship have until Monday, May 1, to submit an application for fall 2017. This scholarship is designed to help a UNC system employee become more effective in either the applicant’s current position or prepare the applicant for promotion with the UNC system.

Faculty and staff members are invited to join colleagues for socializing and networking at a Faculty and Staff Social, which will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m., Thursday, April 27, at the Rose Football Center.

Sponsored by Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, the social will feature light hors d’oeuvres, wine, beer and soft drinks. RSVPs requested.

Repair work to the exterior of Woodward Hall (the section near the Cato College of Education) is underway through Thursday, June 15.

Expect heavy equipment, excavation work, noise and dust and masonry cutting/removal during the project.

Exercise caution when approaching construction zones.

The UNC Charlotte Green Office Program, an initiative piloted by the Sustainability Office in 2015, has reported a notable rise in the number of Green Office certifications. 

The program, now in its third year, encourages and lends support to offices to participate in self-guided assessments that identify ways to improve daily operations to reduce their overall impact at the University. To date, nine offices have successfully assessed and measured their environmental footprint in the areas of, but not limited to, energy, recycling, waste and transportation. 

The Veteran Services Office and the Dean of Students Office will host the 2017 Camo Classic, an annual competition to highlight veterans across campus.

At the classic, scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, April, it will be veteran students versus cadets from the University’s Army and Air Force ROTC in a series of team and individual competitions, including tug-of-war, timed relays, a scavenger hunt, a fire-starting competition and a pie-eating contest at the Cato Plaza. (Note, the date is a change from previous reports.)

This summer, Recreational Services will offer a new learning series called “Swing into Summer” for UNC Charlotte faculty, staff and students who want to stay active while practicing new skills. Online registration is open for golf and tennis lessons and a Couch to 5K program. Classes are fee-based and not for University course credit.

Crowdfund UNC Charlotte allows University students to become leaders and fosters a philanthropic community across campus by providing an online platform that harnesses the power of the community through small gifts to help students, faculty or staff to raise money to fuel their passions, innovations and ideas.

The Division of University Advancement is soliciting applications for crowdfund projects to launch in October 2017.
