Linda Thurman, director of student professional development and employer relations, has been serving UNC Charlotte for 21 years and has continued her service through volunteering with UNC Charlotte and the surrounding community. As a preview for National Volunteer Week, April 18-24, Thurman describes her volunteer experience, how it has changed since COVID-19 and how volunteering, even in small ways, can make an impact. Describe your volunteer experience over the years.

Four individuals and the Return to Campus Kit Group team are this year’s Employees of the Year as announced by the Human Resources Department.

The first Wednesday in April is National Walking Day, and the American Heart Association sponsors this day to remind people about the health benefits of taking a walk.The Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness (ACCEHW) encourages faculty and staff members to celebrate National Walking Day by taking a stroll, April 7. Due to the pandemic, the ACCEHW is not sponsoring group walks this year but encourages employees to walk on their own.

The Human Resources Department received 32 nominations for the 2021 Employee of the Year. Employees can be recognized in the categories of Devotion to Duty, Innovation, Safety/Heroism and Community/Public Service. For this year, 40 staff members were nominated either individually or as members of four teams.

The Dean of Students Office is seeking bell ringers for May’s commencement ceremonies. Faculty and staff should encourage graduating students to apply for this prestigious honor.Bell ringer is a tradition that recognizes outstanding student leaders who have demonstrated exemplary 49er spirit. All applicants must have a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA and be in good disciplinary standing. Applications are due by 11:45 p.m., Sunday, April 18.More information is on the web or call 704-687-0343.

 Effective April 1, 2021, Human Resources will accept new hire forms through DocuSign. This move allows newly hired employees to complete their forms at their convenience and provide official electronic signatures, and it allows HR to capture all the important required information. Once new hires complete their forms, they will upload directly into Perceptive Content, the University’s document imaging solution.

The deadline for nominations for the annual Employee of the Year awards has been extended to 5 p.m., Friday, March 19. Each year, UNC Charlotte recognizes exceptional employees for their dedication to our campus community and beyond.

Vanessa Dodd, Building Environmental Services, needs shared leave donations. The Benefits Office will accept donations through March 22.To contribute leave, faculty and staff should refer to the requirements and participant forms in Personnel Information Memorandum (PIM) 29 or in the literature racks outside of the Benefits Office, King Building, Room 207. Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs Elizabeth A. (Beth) Hardin has decided to resign effective Feb. 28.

Ventureprise is sponsoring 49er Impact, a virtual pitch competition for all UNC Charlotte students, on March 30.
