Smith appointed director of university budgets and financial planning
Kenneth (Ken) Smith is the new director of university budgets and financial planning. He assumed this role Aug 1.
As the University’s budget director, Smith will lead the budgeting processes for the General Fund and auxiliary and student fee operating budgets. He will be responsible for financial planning and analysis for capital projects and providing legislative, policy and management guidance for University leaders. He will report to Anne Brown, associate vice chancellor for finance.
Interim associate vice chancellors for facilities management, safety and security appointed
Kathryn Horne, director of facilities planning, has been appointed interim associate vice chancellor for facilities management. She succeeds Phil Jones, who is retiring after more than 17 years of service.
Lee Snodgrass, director of facilities operations, will be interim associate vice chancellor for safety and security, succeeding Hank James, who is retiring after 9 years with the University.
They will begin their appointments effective Sept. 1.
Bolick needs shared leave
Deborah Bolick from Grants and Contracts Administration needs shared leave donations. The Benefits Office will accept donations through Sept. 6.
To contribute leave, faculty and staff should refer to the requirements and participant forms in Personnel Information Memorandum (PIM) 29 or in the literature racks outside of the Benefits Office, King Building, Room 207. Faculty NinerNET grace period extended
Faculty NinerNET credentials are now active for 150 days, an increase from 120 days, after the contract end date. This will benefit part-time faculty members who teach one semester but not the next. Direct questions to the IT Service Desk at 704-687-5500.
Preliminary feedback requested on IT assessment
Feedback is integral to large-scale decisions, and the chancellor recently requested it via a message to faculty and staff. Consultant BerryDunn’s preliminary findings from the university-wide IT Organizational Review are available. The report is preliminary since the Cabinet asked BerryDunn to provide more information on how their recommendations will affect distributed IT staff.
Members sought for award selection committee
A new faculty honor, the UNC Charlotte Award for Teaching Excellence, will be presented for the first time in fall 2019 in conjunction with the Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence.
Improvements underway to CRI entrance
Construction has started on an entrance feature for the Charlotte Research Institute near the intersection of Institute Circle and N. Tryon Street. This feature will be similar to, but smaller than, the entrance at University City Boulevard (Dickson Gate).
During this work, which is scheduled through mid-January 2019, expect heavy construction equipment, changes to pedestrian routes along Institute Circle and temporary sidewalk and lane closures.
Remember to stay alert and exercise caution when approaching construction zones.

Leadership Development Program applications being accepted
Each year, UNC Charlotte sponsors select employees to attend the five-day Leadership Development Program in Greensboro, North Carolina. Applications for next year’s program will be accepted from Aug. 10 to Sept. 30, 2018.
