Gov. Pat McCrory recently lauded UNC Charlotte’s Collegiate Recovery Community for efforts to address student recovery, underage drinking and substance abuse.
The University was named one of six UNC system campuses to participate in a pilot program with a goal to further deter substance abuse and underage drinking. UNC Charlotte will join ECU, UNC Chapel Hill, North Carolina A&T, UNC Wilmington and UNC Greensboro in the new program. Each campus will receive $125,000 to aid education, prevention and recovery efforts.

Organizers of the inaugural Heroes in Recovery 6K Trail Run/Walk, which will benefit the University’s Collegiate Recovery Community, are seeking volunteers to assist with the event, scheduled for Saturday, June 21.
Volunteers would help with event set up/tear down, registration, food set up, parking and water stations. Each volunteer will receive a Heroes in Recovery T-shirt at check-in. To assist, email the volunteer coordinator at heroesinrecovery@frnmail.com.

“Work Life Balance” is the topic of a lunch-and-learn program scheduled for noon, Wednesday, Dec. 4, in the Student Union, Room 200.
Online RSVPs are requested; faculty and staff members are encouraged to bring their lunch to enjoy during the program, sponsored by the Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness (ACCEHW).
 

The Novant Health Breast Center’s mobile unit will be on campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, at the loading dock behind the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
According to Novant Health officials, mammograms are covered as a preventative screening every 366 days starting at age 40 for most insurance plans; prospective participants should bring their insurance card.

More Americans die annually from sudden cardiac arrest than breast and lung cancer, stroke and AIDS combined. Increasing bystander medical awareness and training to aid individuals who experience sudden cardiac arrest is the impetus for the Lucky Hearts Campaign.

Russell Kirby, Marrell Endowed Chair in Down Syndrome Research in the College of Public Health at the University of South Florida, will present “Spatial Perspectives on Public Health” from 12:30 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the College of Health and Human Services, Room 145.
