Noted entrepreneur to deliver MLK Celebration address
Randal Pinkett will be the featured speaker at this year’s celebration of the life, work and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. His public presentation, “Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?” will be at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.

Spring Gold Rush events welcome new, returning students to campus
Gold Rush is UNC Charlotte’s welcome program that takes place at the beginning of each semester. Events are hosted by campus departments and student organizations and are scheduled during the first few weeks of classes to instill a sense of Niner pride, teach campus traditions (such as the “49 Things To Do Before You Graduate”) and expose students to campus resources and opportunities for involvement.Spring Gold Rush events run through Sunday, Feb. 2.

Researcher helping UNC Charlotte address food insecurity
UNC Charlotte Anthropology professor Nicole Peterson has conducted research on the topic of food insecurity within the greater Charlotte area. But when the Jamil Niner Student Pantry opened on campus in 2014, Peterson decided to conduct her research closer to home. She has worked in conjunction with pantry staff to determine the depths of the food insecurity problem on the UNC Charlotte campus.

CRES piloting new reservation process
Conferences, Reservations and Event Services (CRES) is piloting a new reservation process to use large spaces more effectively and provide more availability.Campus users may request event spaces one academic year in advance for large-scale events using the Advance Reservations Process with the exception of March and April dates for Popp Martin Student Union, Room 340, which become available on Feb. 1.

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (Nov. 18-23) will provide learning and volunteer opportunities to the UNC Charlotte community.

UNC Charlotte to observe National First-Generation College Student Day
There are several ways to define a first-generation college student. Whether they’re the first in their family to attend college at all or the first to attend a four-year institution to attain a bachelor’s degree, there is no denying that first-generation students encounter unique experiences different from fellow students with family who can help them navigate college life.On Friday, Nov. 8, UNC Charlotte will celebrate its first-gens by joining other colleges and universities across the country in recognizing National First-Generation College Students Day.
